Before anything else, a massive, heartfelt thank you to every single person who backed me in the election. Whether you ticked my name on the voting paper, put a sign on your fence, handed out leaflets, gave me an encouraging toot, or simply wished me luck – this win truly belongs to all of us. I’m deeply honoured by the trust you’ve placed in me and I’m determined to make it count every single day.
I’ve now been with Auckland Council for just over a month, and it’s safe to say this organisation is enormous. Fun fact: Auckland Council has the second-largest balance sheet in New Zealand – bigger than Fonterra and second only to central government itself. That’s a huge responsibility, and I’m already getting stuck in.
As we all know, Auckland is growing fast, and we have to get that growth right. Right now, Council is consulting on major proposed changes to the Auckland Unitary Plan known as Plan Change 120 (PC120). These changes are driven by central government direction to enable more housing, while also better protecting people and property from flooding and natural hazards, and focusing new homes in locations well-connected to jobs, shops, public transport and services.
This is one of the biggest planning shake-ups in years, and your voice matters. The consultation is open now and closes at 5pm on Friday, December 19. It only takes a few minutes to have your say. Please jump online at akhaveyoursay.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz and let Council know what you think. The more Hibiscus Coast feedback we get, the stronger I can fight for what’s right for our community.
This month I have my first full round of formal committee meetings. I’m proud to have been appointed:
- Deputy Chair of the Value for Money Committee
- Deputy Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee
- Member of the Appointments & Performance Committee
- Member of the Hauraki Gulf Forum
These leadership roles put me right at the heart of how ratepayers’ money is spent. I’ll be challenging waste wherever I see it, pushing for maximum bang-for-buck, and keeping transparency and accountability front and centre. I’ll keep you updated on what’s happening behind the scenes.
And because the tinsel is already twinkling around the Coast. Here’s wishing every one of you a safe, relaxing and truly Merry Christmas! There’s heaps of festive fun happening right here on our doorstep, so grab family and friends, support local, and let’s make this a summer to remember.
As always, my door and inbox are wide open. Got a pothole, a planning worry, a bright idea, or just fancy a chat? Please don’t hesitate to get in touch any time:
